Being Mindful with Sound

In the frantic world that we live in, how many of us stop to take in the sounds around us and pay mindful attention to them? Just take a moment to listen. What can you hear? At first you might just hear annoying sounds, noise, or you may only be able to pick out individual sounds. Even if you’re sat in silence, you might just hear your own breath, or the humming of your computer.

See if you can let sounds become your thoughts.

Imagine this scenario – you’ve had a busy morning, whether you’re at work, the kids have been playing up, or you’re experiencing pain. You are tired and can’t think straight. Take a short break – gently close your eyes and get yourself in a relaxed position. Just spend a moment bringing your attention to your breath as it flows through your body on in-breath and each out-breath, without altering your breath in any way.

Now that you are relaxed be receptive to sounds as they arise from all directions, near, far, behind, above, to the side. Don’t look for the sounds, let them come to you, which they will. Focus on this for a few moments. How many sounds do you hear?

Now, focus your attention to the thoughts that arise when you hear these sounds. If you find yourself judging them, simply acknowledge this and allow it to pass
