Burnout is rarely caused by one thing alone

Burnout is not simply a workplace problem. And it isn’t simply a personal resilience problem either. It is what happens when relentless pressure collides with poor boundaries, unrealistic expectations, constant availability, and people pushing themselves beyond healthy limits for too long — a lethal combination of:

  • High workplace demands
  • Emotional pressure
  • People-pleasing
  • Perfectionism
  • Lack of recovery
  • Blurred boundaries
  • “Always on” cultures
  • High performers ignoring their own warning signs

Because the people most at risk are often the people who care the most. The reliable ones. The resilient ones. The people who never want to let anyone down — until, eventually, their body forces them to stop.

The Reality Behind the Statistics

Stress, depression, and anxiety caused 22.1 million lost working days last year.
20%
One in five workers took time off due to stress-related mental health concerns.
£51billion
Poor mental wellbeing costs UK employers up to £51 billion every year.
70%
Nearly 70% of employees say their manager impacts their mental health as much as their partner.
45%
Only 45% of managers have received training to support mental health conversations. And rarely is there any follow training.
50%
Nearly half of employees do not feel psychologically safe enough to speak up at work.

Why Prevention Matters

Most people don’t suddenly burn out overnight. Burnout builds quietly — saying yes too often, skipping recovery, normalising stress, losing boundaries, functioning while exhausted, and pushing through the warning signs.

That’s why my work focuses on prevention before crisis: helping organisations and individuals recognise the warning signs earlier, create healthier ways of working, and build practical habits that improve wellbeing and performance long term.

Because burnout prevention isn’t about working less — it’s about working differently: more sustainably, more intelligently, and more humanely.

This is not Tick-Box Wellbeing

I don’t deliver generic wellbeing talks filled with theory people forget by Friday.

I create emotionally powerful, practical experiences that help people recognise burnout earlier, think differently about pressure, and leave with tools they can use immediately.

People don’t just hear my story — they see themselves in it. And that’s where change begins.

My sessions are interactive, emotionally engaging, practical, energising, thought-provoking, and memorable.

I create environments where people feel safe enough to reflect honestly, engage openly, and take meaningful action — which is why the impact lasts long after the applause.

  • “I heard Shona give a keynote speech at an event in Bristol. She was engaging, insightful and amusing and I was hanging off every word. If you haven’t heard her story, then get yourself to an event she is speaking at. I also had the pleasure at sitting at her table for dinner and enjoyed chatting to her very much.”

  • Shona delivers one of the best, if not alarming, talks on burnout I’ve heard. It’s a gripping story that shows how burnout creeps up on you and the dangers of ignoring the signals. But, it’s also optimistic and up-lifting. There is a future, post burnout. Shona shares plenty of advice from someone who has come out the other side. It’s advice we should all take.

  • Wow what a truly inspirational talk, we had laughter, tears and everything in between. Shona was pitch perfect in her content for the audience and it’s the 2nd time I’ve booked her for clients and no doubt will be many more bookings in the future. Genuine, heart felt and such an inspirational journey she takes you on with a very important message. Highly recommended.
